The Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) is all set to host major events, after conducting the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), with the 5th Chandigarh Golf League (CGL) and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI)-backed Trident Open Golf on the cards in the upcoming months.
Sources claimed that the CGL will witness some changes — majorly involving increase in number of teams. The organisers have already approved the addition to three new teams, taking the number of teams to 24 this year. With the increase in the number of teams, the participation and increased prize money is also said to have been approved.
The CGC had awarded a prize money of nearly Rs 34 lakh in the last edition of the event. “We have almost finalised the proposal given by the organising committee, and certain changes will be done in a day or two,” said Atul Sachdeva, coordinator, CGL.
In the previous edition, after one of the teams had confirmed its non-participation, an auction was held to decide on the 21st team. The highest bidder (representing a real estate developer) paid more than Rs 71 lakh (including GST) to confirm their participation in the league.
However, with the addition of three teams this year, the auction is likely to get more intense. The CGC had hosted auction of 233 golfers (out of the 450 interested) registered in the CGL pool. The auction didn’t involve monetary exchange, but a team was given around 60 lakh points to pick the golfers in their team.
PGTI event to be followed
The PGTI will host their only event either in September or November — The Trident Open — which made its debut last year by replacing the Jeev Milkha Invitational Open. It is most likely to be held in November, as the club will try to keep the greens fine for the CGL. The PGTI will officially release the dates of their event next month.
“We have planned the event (The Trident Open), and already discussing the dates with the sponsors and with the CGC office-bearers. We have offered them to host this event either in September or November, and will plan accordingly,” said Amandeep Johal, chief executive officer (CEO), PGTI.
Manu Gandas had won the inaugural Trident Open 2025 by overpowering Chandigarh’s Yuvraj Sandhu and Shubham Jaglan in a three-way playoff.
