Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi has written to UT Chief Secretary H. Rajesh Prasad, seeking immediate desilting, cleaning and strengthening work of N-Choe and Patiala Ki Rao ahead of the upcoming monsoon season to prevent flooding, waterlogging and public inconvenience across the city.

In his letter, the Mayor highlighted that every year during heavy rainfall, several sectors, villages and colonies witness severe waterlogging, overflow of choes, blockage of drainage channels and traffic disruptions, causing inconvenience to residents and damage to public infrastructure.

He stated that N-Choe, one of the city’s major stormwater carrier systems, has witnessed continuous accumulation of silt, debris, garbage, wild vegetation and encroachments at several locations, adversely affecting its carrying capacity during monsoon rains.

The Mayor further pointed out that Patiala Ki Rao, another important seasonal water channel connected to the city’s drainage network, also requires urgent desilting, removal of obstructions and strengthening of vulnerable points before the onset of the monsoon.

Seeking immediate intervention, the Mayor urged the UT Administration and concerned departments to undertake comprehensive desilting and cleaning operations, remove obstructions affecting water flow, identify vulnerable points prone to overflow and erosion, and complete all major preventive works well before the rainy season.

He emphasised that timely preventive measures and coordinated action among all concerned departments would help ensure smooth drainage management during the monsoon and safeguard residents from avoidable hardships.
