The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has identified three parks — Shanti Kunj, Leisure Valley and Green belt of Sector 50 — for implementing the concept of an ‘Elevated Sky-Garden Pathway’.

Sources said that Amit Kumar, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, has written a letter to the Secretary Local Govt, Chandigarh Administration, for examining the feasibility of the project at suitable locations, including these three locations identified by the civic body.

The Commissioner, in the letter, says a communication received from the office of the Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, called for exploration of innovative interventions for enhancing the city’s green infrastructure while preserving its ecological integrity, in alignment with the vision of “Viksit Chandigarh 2047".

In this regard, the concept of an elevated sky-garden pathway is proposed to be examined as a pilot project for the city, introducing a new approach to urban garden design through vertical utilisation of park spaces while preserving ground-level ecology.

The key objectives of the proposed pilot project are as under:-

  • Enhancement of effective green area by reducing ground-level paving
  • Protection of existing landscaping and flowerbeds from pedestrian movement
  • Promotion of biodiversity by minimising disturbance to natural habitats
  • Improvement of urban aesthetics and eco-tourism potential
  • Adoption of sustainable and smart urban design practices

It is further proposed that feasibility of the project may be examined at suitable locations such as Shanti Kunj, Leisure Valley and the green belt of Sector 50.

The commissioner has further requested that the above proposal may be forwarded to the Department of Urban Planning for consideration.

The project is the brainchild of Mayor Saurabh Joshi, who recently visited the Mumbai Municipal Corporation office to examine the concept of elevated walkways and nature trails as a transformative urban intervention. It was proposed that elevated pedestrian pathways be developed within city parks, green belts, and select urban corridors, subject to technical feasibility.

These structures would enable citizens to experience greenery from an elevated perspective while protecting ground-level vegetation and minimising ecological disturbance. Such elevated walkways are envisioned to enhance safe pedestrian movement, promote eco-sensitive recreation, improve accessibility to green spaces, and support climate-resilient urban planning. The initiative reflects a progressive approach towards integrating mobility with green infrastructure.
