KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed the appointment of former international shuttler Chang Kim Wai as the new assistant coach for the men’s doubles department, marking the 49-year-old’s return to the national setup after eight years.

Kim Wai, who will report for duty on November 4, joins the men’s doubles coaching team under head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi and coach Muhammad Miftakh. His appointment is expected to further strengthen Malaysia’s doubles programme ahead of next year’s major tournaments.

Born in Perak, Kim Wai was among Malaysia’s top men’s doubles players in the early 2000s, winning a silver medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, a bronze at the 2002 Asian Games, and helping Malaysia to a Thomas Cup silver the same year.

Following his retirement, he began coaching at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) before joining the elite national squad, where he served from 2004 to 2017. During that time, he worked with players like current national No. 1s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

After leaving BAM, Kim Wai assisted Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei at his academy in Ipoh before spending three years coaching in China.

BAM doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky welcomed Kim Wai’s return, describing him as “a strong addition to the setup” with a deep tactical understanding of doubles play.

“His proven track record and experience will be invaluable as we continue to raise the standard of Malaysia’s men’s doubles,” Rexy said through a statement issued by BAM today.

Kim Wai’s comeback comes just weeks after reports that the national body was on the lookout for a men's doubles coach.

With his return now official, BAM’s men’s doubles department once again has a complete coaching lineup, while the women’s and mixed doubles squads continue under their respective head coaches — Rosman Razak and Nova Widianto. — October 30, 2025
