Kota Kinabalu: Charlayne Chong continued her recent good form to capture the UUM (Universiti Utara Malaysia) Open Golf ladies title held at the Sultan Sallehuddin Golf Club in Kedah on August 30.
The Sabahan emerged champion with a three-day total of 214 strokes (73-68-73) to take home the RM1,500 cash, a cart bag and a trophy.
It was a convincing victory for her as first-day leader Nurul Adawiyah Abdul Jali who finished in second place was 11 strokes adrift with 225 (71,75,79) and in third was Alya Afza Hazari (227-79,76,72).
Charlayne, when contacted, said she was delighted with her overall performance throughout the tournament.
“I’m really pleased with how I played overall in this tournament. My scores showed that I managed to keep things steady and that has given myself a good chance throughout the tournament.
“On the second day, everything just sort of went well. I hit a lot of fairways, my approach shots were sharper, my scrambling game was on point and I managed to roll in a couple of birdie putts as well.
“That gave me a lot of confidence and put me in a good position in the leaderboard. Going into the final round, my approach was just to stay patient, stick to my game plan, and not force anything. It was humid as well, so walking definitely felt harder on the last day but I stayed composed and focused on finishing strong which I was glad that I did,” she said.
The 23-year-old had earlier in August finished third in the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open behind Indonesian Bianca Naomi Laksono and Filipina Samantha Dizon.
She had also won the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf title held in late July.
