Kota Kinabalu: A self-employed man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, here, Thursday with cheating a man of RM28,350 over the building a swiftlet house last year.
Mohd Geffery Shamsir, 39, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to cheating Helson Michael Tasek by tricking him to hand over the cash between June 1 and June 30, last year.
The offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of between one and 10 years, and whipping and fine, on conviction.
The prosecution in applying for a mention date, proposed bail at RM4,000.
Geffery, through a duty counsel, requested for a lower bail by saying that he was self-employed, among others.
The Magistrate set April 11 for case management and released the accused on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
In another case, eight people were penalised for committing various drug-related offences.
Md Azraley Jais, 22, paperless Filipina Satrina Usni, 26, and Nazarius Domianus, 46, pleaded guilty to having syabu, separately.
Azraley was sentenced to 11 months’ jail for having 0.78gm of syabu at Inanam Taipan, Inanam on Nov 15, 2022.
Satrina was jailed nine months for having 0.13gm syabu at Kg Delima here on Nov 24, 2022.
She was also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the jail sentence from the date of her arrest.
Nazarius was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,600 or 10 months’ jail for having 0.23gm of syabu at Kg Air here on Dec 21, last year.
They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, Nazarius and five others Kenneth Kennedy, Sharizan Madin, Thomas Herman, Noorlilah Divis and Musdimin Bakar admitted to taking syabu at separate locations here and in Penampang between Dec 21, 2022 and Jan 17 this year.
Nazarius and Musdimin were each fined RM2,000 or five months’ jail while the rest were handed five months’ jail each.
Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuted.
