A COLLISION involving a chemical-laden lorry and another vehicle led to a hazardous spill of nitric acid and calcium hypochlorite on Jalan Besar Sabak Bernam, Sungai Besar, on Wednesday evening.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the department received an alert regarding the incident at 7.01pm and immediately deployed personnel to the scene.
"Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that an accident had occurred involving a lorry transporting chemicals and another lorry, causing containers of chemicals to fall and leak," he said in a statement issued today.
He confirmed the presence of "a 68 per cent nitric acid spill from 40 containers, and calcium hypochlorite at 70 per cent concentration from another 24 containers," clarifying that the percentages referred to chemical concentration, not volume of spillage.
"There was one male victim, the lorry driver, but he did not sustain any injuries," he added.
Ahmad Mukhlis said the hazardous material was subsequently cleaned up by the department’s Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Unit, with the operation concluding fully at 2.42am on Thursday.
The clean-up operation involved 24 personnel from the Sabak Bernam and Sungai Besar Fire and Rescue Stations, supported by Hazmat officers from the Rawang station. - July 11, 2025
