- The BBC has announced the cancellation of its iconic winter sports programme Ski Sunday after nearly 50 years on air, having first been broadcast in 1978.
- The seasonal weekly show has been axed as part of changes to BBC Sport's output to adapt to evolving audience viewing habits and deliver value for licence fee payers.
- Philip Bernie, head of events at BBC Sport, praised the show's team and confirmed that the BBC remains committed to covering winter sports, particularly the Winter Olympics across its platforms.
- Originally launched following the 1976 Innsbruck Games and presented for many years by David Vine, the programme was most recently fronted by Ed Leigh alongside Chemmy Alcott.
- Reflecting on her time on the show, which began in 2021, Alcott wrote on Facebook that she was “absolutely gutted” and that Ski Sunday had shown she was “more than just a racer” after being forced into early retirement.
- Alcott added that it hurts knowing that the show will not reach its 50th anniversary but promised that she isn’t “going anywhere” and will continue to celebrate athletes’ stories.
