Malaysian motorists were left concerned after photos surfaced online showing a Chery Omoda 5 stranded in front of AEON Tebrau in Johor, with its rear axle assembly and wheels detached from the vehicle.

Following the incident, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced on Facebook that it was temporarily suspending Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the Chery Omoda 5 as a precautionary measure.

The suspension halts new registrations for the affected model and variants while technical investigations are ongoing. JPJ said it would conduct a technical audit involving the vehicle’s production line and parts suppliers to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following the incident, Chery Auto Malaysia also announced on Facebook that it would work closely with JPJ to address the issue.

“Chery Auto Malaysia will begin a Recall Campaign for affected OMODA 5 (variant C & H), to inspect and replace the component where necessary,” it said.

Chery also apologised to affected customers and clarified that its current production models are not affected by the recall campaign.

Chery previously recalled 600 Omoda 5 vehicles in 2024

This is not the first time the Omoda 5 has faced scrutiny over its rear axle assembly. According to Berita Harian, in 2024, Chery recalled 600 Omoda 5 vehicles in Malaysia following concerns over potential welding defects in the rear axle assembly.

However, it has not been confirmed whether the latest incident in Johor was caused by the same issue.

How Omoda 5 owners can check if their cars are affected

Chery is urging owners of the Omoda 5 C and H variants to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through its official website to determine whether their vehicles are affected by the latest recall.

Affected vehicles will receive inspections and necessary component replacements free of charge at authorised service centres.

Owners who require further information or wish to arrange an inspection can contact the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888.
