Chery Omoda 5 buyers waiting to get their cars on the road will have to hold on a little longer. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the SUV, which effectively puts a stop to new registrations of the model until further notice.

The decision comes after a video went viral last week showing an Omoda 5 in Tebrau, Johor Bahru with its rear axle detached from the car. In its statement, JPJ said it views the incident seriously, as it has raised public concern over the safety of the vehicle.

JPJ has instructed Chery Malaysia to track down every unit that could be affected, using details such as part numbers, production batches, chassis numbers (VIN) and other technical parameters. Any vehicle identified as being at risk must then be recalled so it can be inspected and fixed.

On top of that, JPJ will also carry out a technical audit of the Omoda 5’s production and assembly line, as well as the supplier of the axle components. This will look into the manufacturer’s compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), its quality control systems, the inspection procedures for weld joints and the safety of the components used.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the Omoda 5’s rear axle has made the news. In 2024, Chery Malaysia inspected around 600 units fitted with rear axle components produced between 14 and 17 August 2023, after an issue was traced to an equipment calibration problem at its supplier.

Meanwhile, Chery Auto Malaysia has responded with a statement of its own, confirming that it will begin a recall campaign for the affected Omoda 5 units. The recall covers the C and H variants, and will see the relevant component inspected and replaced where necessary. The company added that it has been working closely with JPJ since the incident was first reported.

If you own an Omoda 5, you can check whether your car is affected by entering its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on Chery Malaysia’s website. Affected owners will get a comprehensive inspection of their vehicle, with any follow-up work, including replacing the component, done free of charge.

Even if your car isn’t on the list, Chery is encouraging Omoda 5 owners who want extra peace of mind to drop by an authorised Chery service centre to have it checked. For more information on the recall, you can contact their careline at 03-9388 0888.
