Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Chief Minister and GRS chairman Hajiji Noor has condemned the rioting by Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Malaysia (KDM) supporters in Tenom.

Earlier Saturday, it was reported that a riot had broken out after KDM president Peter Anthony’s nomination was rejected by the Election Commission (EC). A video of the incident showed anti-riot police firing a tear gas canister into the crowd, many of them carrying KDM flags, trying to get into the nomination centre.

In a statement, the Chief Minister’s office said Hajiji urged the public to remain calm and avoid getting emotional.

“The Chief Minister wants the authorities to probe the incident.”

Peter had been jailed for three years and fined RM50,000 in May and is still appealing the case.

Later, at a press conference, Peter said he had been granted a stay of conviction pending his appeal to the High Court. He said he would leave it to the courts to decide whether he could contest in the general election.
