Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar mandates department heads to ensure WFH staff follow rules and meet KPIs, stressing productivity and prudence.

SHAH ALAM: Department heads must ensure staff working from home adhere strictly to prescribed rules and meet key performance indicators. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar issued this directive today.

He emphasised that the WFH policy, starting April 15, is not for resting or shopping. It requires maintained or increased productivity compared to office work.

This move aligns with the Public Service Reform Agenda’s human capital development pillar. Shamsul Azri spoke at the Selangor-level Taat Setia MADANI Road Tour here.

He also stressed that civil servants must lead by example in implementing directives wisely. He called for a consistent culture of prudence across all departments.

“Switch off unused lights and fans. Set air-conditioning appropriately and conduct meetings online to cut costs,” he said.

He advised avoiding waste and refraining from purchasing luxury office assets unless absolutely necessary. The government is also reducing official overseas visits to minimise expenditure.

Shamsul Azri explained the decision to forgo national Aidilfitri celebrations was to promote moderation. It considers those less fortunate, including people in Gaza.

A circular issued yesterday outlined eligibility for the WFH policy. It applies to federal civil servants in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and state capitals with a commute over eight kilometres.

The circular is titled ‘Implementation of Work From Home for the Public Service Following the West Asia Conflict’. It was signed by Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.

It references the existing Human Resource Services Circular on the WFH policy. The phased WFH implementation is a strategic measure for global energy crisis preparedness.
