A 39-year-old man from China with a PhD from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and a Master’s degree from Oxford turned to food delivery after facing repeated rejections in job interviews.

Ding Yuanzhao has since gained attention online and been dubbed “the most highly educated food delivery rider” due to his impressive academic background, as reported by AsiaOne.

He faced rejection from 10 jobs

Ding explained that despite sending out numerous resumes and attending more than 10 interviews, he was unable to land a suitable job.

In a WeChat post from April last year, he shared that he had previously worked on postdoctoral research at the National University of Singapore (NUS), but his contract ended in March.

After struggling to find a new job, he turned to working as a food delivery rider with Grab and Foodpanda in Singapore, earning about $700 (RM3,314) a week by putting in around 10 hours a day.

“If you work hard, you can make a decent living”

Ding also mentioned that one of the perks of being a food delivery rider is getting a workout while on the job.

“It’s a stable job. I can support my family with this income. If you work hard, you can make a decent living. It’s not a bad job,” he said.

He had previously posted a video in June addressing students who didn’t perform well in China’s national university entrance exam, encouraging them not to lose hope.

“If you didn’t get good results, don’t be pessimistic or discouraged. And if you did well, remember that most jobs don’t make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things,” Ding said.
