Police have detained a Chinese national after a local man reported being secretly filmed in a public restroom in a shopping mall toilet in Bukit Jalil last Thursday.
Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said the suspect, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested at 1:28 PM on the same day after authorities received a complaint from the victim. The incident is said to have taken place at about 11 AM in the men’s restroom on the fourth floor of the mall.

According to police, the victim was using a toilet cubicle when he became aware of unusual movement from a neighbouring stall. Upon closer observation, he allegedly saw a mobile phone being positioned to record him from the adjacent cubicle. Alarmed by the discovery, the man lodged a police report, prompting swift action by officers.
Following the arrest, police seized the suspect’s mobile phone for examination. A preliminary inspection of the device allegedly uncovered several obscene recordings stored in its gallery, raising further concerns about the suspect’s activities.
Suspect admitted to committing the crime
Mohd Rosdi said initial investigations indicated that the suspect admitted to committing the offence. Further checks also revealed that he did not possess valid travel or residency documents, suggesting he was staying in Malaysia unlawfully.
As a result, the case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which deals with acts intended to insult the modesty of an individual. In addition, the suspect is also being probed under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for remaining in the country without a valid permit.

Police have since obtained a 14-day remand order against the suspect under immigration laws. He will be held from 27 March until 9 April to facilitate further investigations.
Authorities have reminded members of the public to remain vigilant in public spaces and to immediately report any suspicious or intrusive behaviour to ensure swift enforcement action can be taken.
