TANGKAK – Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claimed that support from Chinese voters for the coalition has increased significantly in the Johor state election, giving BN confidence that its MCA and MIC candidates stand a good chance of winning.

He said the finding was based on BN's analysis of voter response at every polling district centre and voting stream.

"We have conducted studies based on voter response at the polling district centres and voting streams.

"We are very pleased because the wave of support from Chinese voters for BN candidates has grown.

"We fielded underdog candidates in constituencies with large Chinese electorates, but voters felt that the previous elected representatives had failed to perform as well as expected.

"They told me this is the time to place their trust in non-Umno candidates, namely those from MCA and MIC, and give them an opportunity in the 19 identified constituencies," he told reporters after a meet-and-greet session with Chinese voters at a food court here on Sunday.

Zahid said BN is fielding 37 Umno candidates, 15 MCA candidates and four MIC candidates in the Johor state election.

"We are fielding 19 non-Malay candidates, and this has created a very positive perception of BN among Chinese voters.

"I hope this momentum of support will continue until polling day on July 11," he said.
