Christian Eriksen probably didn’t imagine he’d end up in the middle of a relegation fight when he signed with Wolfsburg earlier this season.

Christian Eriksen made 107 appearances during his three-year spell at Manchester United.

Eriksen spent seven years at Tottenham before finally picking up silverware after joining Manchester United, where he won both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup under Erik ten Hag.

After leaving Old Trafford, Eriksen was without a club for a while before signing with Wolfsburg, but his time in Germany hasn’t gone as smoothly as he’d hoped.

Eriksen left United at the end of last season after his contract expired, so he’s seen just how difficult things can get at a big club.

That season, United finished 15th in the Premier League and also lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

After that, Eriksen moved to Wolfsburg on a Bosman transfer.

When he signed, Wolfsburg still carried the reputation of their 2008/09 Bundesliga title win, their DFB Cup victory in 2014/15, and regular appearances in European competitions.

They also have one of the higher-valued squads in Germany. Still, they’ve ended up right in the thick of a relegation scrap this season.

The weekend’s 4-0 defeat to VfB Stuttgart left Daniel Bauer’s side sitting second from bottom.

This season, Eriksen has played 22 times for Wolfsburg, contributing one goal and five assists. The 34-year-old remains an important player even as things get tougher around him.

Wolfsburg haven’t been relegated since they were first promoted to the Bundesliga back in 1997.

In fact, they’re one of just a few clubs who’ve managed to stay up for nearly three straight decades without dropping down a division.

Their closest calls came back-to-back in 2016/17 and again in 2017/18 when they finished 16th both times and had to survive through relegation play-offs on each occasion.

Christian Eriksen opens up about Wolfsburg’s relegation worries

Eriksen has seen plenty in his playing days.

After coming through the ranks at Ajax, he built his reputation at Tottenham before spells with Inter Milan, Brentford, Manchester United, and now Wolfsburg.

“I’ve actually mostly been ‘on the other side’,” Eriksen told Kicker, as quoted by Tipsbladet.

“In many of the clubs I’ve played for, it’s been about finishing in the top 10. Brentford was perhaps an exception. And in Wolfsburg, it’s actually the first time I’ve been in a relegation battle.

“But that’s football. In the end, it’s an experience that comes with it, says the Danish national team player.”
