Christian Horner's successor Laurent Mekies signs new long-term Red Bull contract

Laurent Mekies has signed a new five-year contract with Red Bull, tying the team principal to the British-based outfit for the long term.

The Frenchman was parachuted into the role to replace Christian Horner, who was ousted by Red Bull following last year's British Grand Prix at the age of 52.

Red Bull have pinned their hopes on Mekies leading them back to world championship glory after rewarding him with the deal, which runs one year longer than Max Verstappen's.

The four-time world champion Verstappen signed terms earlier this year to stay with Red Bull until the end of 2030.

Red Bull endured a poor start to the current season, but the team has bounced back in recent races, with Verstappen triumphing at the last two fixtures in Malaysia and Singapore.

“I am incredibly proud to continue this journey with Red Bull Racing,” said Mekies. "I would like to thank everyone involved for the trust they have placed in the project.

"What makes this team special is the way everyone comes together in pursuit of the same goal, and I feel privileged to work alongside such a talented and committed group every day.

“We have a strong platform for the years ahead, and we genuinely believe this is only the beginning. As we look ahead, we will continue to embrace the principles that define us: being free in our thinking, fast in our actions and bold in our decisions.”

Meanwhile, Horner has been linked with a return to F1 in recent months. Speaking to The Independent about his Red Bull sacking, Horner insisted he is determined to move on and seek the next challenge.

"What doesn't break you makes you stronger,” he says, matter-of-factly, looking back on a chapter which saw him dominate the front pages more than the back. “It was a difficult period. In life, there are always going to be challenges and you're always learning. Now for me, it's about asking what comes next."

Horner also praised his wife, Geri, for her support during a difficult period in his career.

“She was phenomenal,” he acknowledged. ”As your wife, as your partner and as your friend, she showed incredible support and strength. Of course, it's always your partner that you offload your bad days, as well as your good days. She’s been an absolute pillar of strength and has always been quick to offer perspective.”
