The LeBron James of soccer was in top form for his country as the USMNT beat Paraguay in their World Cup opener.

Folarin Balogun netted twice for the hosts as they eventually came out 4-1 winners in their first Group D clash of the summer.

The former Arsenal striker’s first goal of the night was set up by Christian Pulisic before he was taken off at half-time.

Despite only playing 45 minutes against Paraguay, though, Pulisic did enough to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup assist total.

Christian Pulisic has more World Cup assists than Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo may be regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, perhaps only second to Lionel Messi.

But the Portugal star has never really performed at the highest level when competing at World Cups.

He has scored eight goals at the tournament in the past, which pales in comparison to Messi (13) and other big names who have played at so many World Cups.

Meanwhile, in his 22 appearances in the competition, Ronaldo has only managed to provide two assists.

Pulisic, on the other hand, now has three assists to his name in just five appearances at the world’s biggest tournament.

That means he took 17 fewer games to overtake one of the sport’s all-time top players.

Most assists at World Cups

He is still some way off surpassing the overall assist record at World Cups, though.

West Germany midfielder Fritz Walter currently holds the record for the most assists at World Cups (9).

Meanwhile, Brazil legend Pele (6) holds the record for the most assists in a single World Cup campaign.

Pulisic may well end up reaching those numbers, but it would likely require the US to have a deep run in the tournament.

But so far at least, they look well on course to make it out of their group and into the knockout rounds.

And unlike in previous World Cups, that phase will start with a Round of 32, meaning there is an extra game for Pulisic to boost his numbers.
