CIDG eyes homicide, hazing in death of Ateneo student-athletes

MANILA, Philippines — The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said preliminary investigation suggest that the death of two student-athletes of the Ateneo de Manila University could qualify for a case of homicide and hazing.

Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili drowned during a team building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.

The CIDG presented a timeline of incidents beginning from Baterbonia’s departure from Davao City up to the last activity the group did before the drowning happened.

Major General Robert Alexander Morico II, CIDG director, said the direction of the possible cases will depend on the results of the interview done on everyone involved including the coaching staff, players present during the activity as well as university executives.
