A CIVIL servant from Dungun has reported losing RM742,000 after falling victim to an online investment scheme that promised returns of RM1.45 million.

The 46-year-old man became interested in the scheme after encountering a Facebook advertisement offering multiple investment packages.

According to Dungun District Police Chief, Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir, the victim opted for the basic package, investing RM400 with the promise of earning RM8,500 within just 48 hours.

“He was then added to a WhatsApp group and subsequently made payments as instructed. The victim conducted 145 transactions across 19 different accounts and was promised a total return of RM1,452,550,” Superintendent Maizura said today.

The victim became suspicious after being repeatedly asked to make further payments and, having received no profits as promised, lodged a police report on 6 January.

“He claims to have lost RM742,000. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” she added, warning the public not to fall prey to schemes that promise unusually high returns in a short period. - January 21, 2026
