Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has reaffirmed that his decision to part ways with Umno stemmed solely from personal conviction and was not influenced by any form of pressure or external expectation. The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry emphasized that the move had no connection to any intention of contesting in a by-election, putting to rest speculation surrounding his political transition.
In explaining the rationale behind his departure, Tengku Zafrul acknowledged that it had not been an easy decision. However, he indicated that the choice was made after thorough reflection and consideration of various perspectives shared with him over time. He maintained that it was a step taken after deep personal contemplation rather than coercion or strategic maneuvering.
He also made it clear that no plans exist for him to contest in any by-elections, either at the federal or state level. Tengku Zafrul took a firm stance against unnecessary by-elections, arguing that such exercises consume public funds and time without justifiable cause.
Having recently returned from performing the Hajj pilgrimage alongside his wife, he stated that he would continue his responsibilities as a senator until his term concludes at the end of December. On the matter of his ministerial role, Tengku Zafrul expressed deference to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that he is willing to contribute to the nation’s development in any role deemed suitable, regardless of formal title or position.
His political shift was cemented by his recent announcement to resign from all posts held in Umno and align himself with the People’s Justice Party (PKR). This move has triggered mixed reactions within the Unity Government, with some quarters expressing concern over potential tensions it might create within the coalition. Certain leaders questioned the optics of PKR’s apparent acceptance of his entry, raising doubts about the consistency of the government’s spirit of collaboration.
Despite the criticism, Tengku Zafrul has chosen to focus on his broader aim of national service, distancing himself from partisan motives. He underscored that his political journey is driven by personal belief in values and principles, rather than party loyalty or political ambition. The transition, he insisted, represents a continuation of his commitment to serve the country in ways that transcend conventional political affiliations.
