Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has expressed disapproval of holding by-elections solely for the purpose of acquiring or maintaining government positions when there is no pressing necessity. His stance comes amid discussions following his departure from UMNO and subsequent move to the People's Justice Party (PKR).
The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry argued that initiating by-elections without valid justification places a burden on public resources and requires considerable time. He also emphasized that the idea of triggering a by-election was never part of his consideration when making his recent political shift.
Clarifying his position further, he stated that he will continue serving as a senator until his term concludes in December. As for his ministerial role, Tengku Zafrul noted that any decision regarding his position lies entirely with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He affirmed his readiness to serve the nation in any capacity, regardless of title, adding that he had stepped away from the corporate sector with a genuine intention to contribute to national development.
His political transition stirred significant discussion, especially after he formally resigned from all positions in UMNO and announced his membership in PKR. The move was portrayed as a result of careful thought and evaluation of political alignment rather than any external pressure.
Tengku Zafrul reiterated that the decision was deeply personal and not driven by coercion. He acknowledged that it had not been an easy choice, but one made after taking into account various perspectives. He maintained that every individual holds the right to chart their own political journey.
Despite leaving UMNO, he expressed gratitude to the party's leadership, particularly UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and members of the Executive Committee. He also extended thanks to grassroots supporters, especially from the Kota Raja Division, for their backing during his time with the party.
Tengku Zafrul concluded his remarks by asking for continued support and prayers as he embarks on a new chapter of his political path, having just returned from the Holy Land with renewed determination.
His remarks also indirectly responded to views suggesting that a by-election might be necessary for political relevance, as proposed earlier by Professor Wong Chin Huat from Sunway University.
