Love them or hate them, Capri pants are going nowhere – and Claudia Winkleman has just shown us how to give them a formal spin fit for the red carpet. Popularised by the likes of Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Alexa Chung modelling the calf-length trouser on social media, the presenter flaunted a characteristic all-black look pairing the Capris with a blazer and white heels last night at the BAFTAs.

Capri pants aka “pedal pushers” were first worn by cyclists, aware of their trousers getting caught in their bike chains. But it was German fashion designer Sonja de Lennart who designed Capris as we know them today – a fitted three-quarter length trouser with a short slit on the outer-side of the leg, as worn by the presenter on the red carpet. This formed part of De Lennart’s Capri Collection, inspired by the Italian island.
Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot sealed the trousers as a staple of the coming decades, with resurgences in the 90s and Noughties. They’ve made a comeback this year, with some arguing they’re a trend that needs to stay in the past. However if you’re on board with the cropped trouser style and want to recreate Claudia’s red carpet look, this is where to replicate her style from the high street, including a £18 pair from M&S which are almost an exact match.
