The Cleveland Guardians found one of the strangest ways possible to make franchise history against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Kyle Manzardo came off the bench in the ninth inning and delivered the only run of the night, turning a tense pitchers’ duel into a 1-0 Guardians win at Citizens Bank Park.

It was not just a clutch swing. It was a first for a Cleveland franchise that has been around since 1901.

Kyle Manzardo gives Cleveland Guardians historic 1-0 win over Philadelphia Phillies

Sarah Langs on X highlighted the unusual history behind Kyle Manzardo’s pinch-hit home run against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“This is the first time in Cleveland franchise history they’ve won a game 1-0 on a pinch-hit home run,” Langs tweeted.

Manzardo entered as a pinch-hitter with one out in the top of the ninth and crushed a solo shot off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran.

The swing broke a scoreless tie, gave Cleveland the only run it needed, and extended the Guardians’ winning streak to a season-high seven games.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, it was also the first time Cleveland had ever won a 1-0 game where the lone run came on a pinch-hit homer.

Kyle Manzardo’s home run saves Gavin Williams’ gem for Cleveland Guardians

Manzardo’s homer mattered even more because it preserved one of the best pitching performances of Gavin Williams’ season. Williams threw eight scoreless innings, allowed only four hits, and struck out 11, matching Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez across a brilliant duel.

Sanchez was just as sharp for Philadelphia, throwing eight scoreless innings with six strikeouts before the bullpen finally blinked in the ninth. Cleveland then handed the game to Cade Smith, who closed the bottom of the ninth by retiring Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper to finish the shutout.

The win showed why the Guardians’ streak has been about more than one hot bat. They got elite starting pitching, clean defense, a perfect late swing, and a bullpen finish against one of the National League’s most dangerous lineups.

For Manzardo, the moment also added to a season that has mixed power flashes with inconsistency. Coming off the bench and deciding a 1-0 game with one swing is the kind of quirky history that can define a winning streak.
