A Malaysian man has recalled a frightening experience where he was allegedly told that he had tested positive for HIV and syphilis, only to later find out that his test result had apparently been mixed up with another patient’s.
The man, who goes by Fahmi online, shared the experience in the comment section of a Threads post about HIV screening.
According to him, the incident took place at a government clinic years ago.
‘My mind started thinking where I could have gotten it’
In his Threads comments, Fahmi said the clinic had allegedly mixed up his blood test result with another person’s.
He recalled being told by the doctor that he was positive for HIV, which immediately sent his mind racing.
Fahmi said he began trying to recall whether he had unknowingly been exposed to the virus somewhere.
He even wondered whether he might have accidentally sat on or been pricked by a needle.
The news left him in complete shock.
He said he broke out in a cold sweat and felt as though his mind had gone blank upon hearing that he was positive for HIV and syphilis.
Requested another test to confirm the result
Instead of immediately accepting the result, Fahmi asked the doctor if he could undergo another test.
About a week later, he said the doctor apologised to him after the new test produced a different result.
Fahmi later shared that the result was negative.
Despite the scare, he decided not to pursue the matter further, saying the doctor had apologised and he was able to take another test for free.
However, the experience left a lasting impression on him.
In another Threads comment, Fahmi said he still feels worried whenever he has to undergo similar tests.
He added that he would even remind doctors not to mix up his blood sample or result. He also advised others who receive an unexpected result not to immediately panic.
According to Fahmi, they can request another test to confirm the result rather than accepting it straight away.
Netizens shocked by his experience
His story surprised several netizens, with some questioning how such a mistake could have happened.
One commenter pointed out that an incorrect result could significantly affect a person’s life, especially if their family found out.
Another suggested that samples should be checked multiple times to ensure that they belong to the correct patient.
Fahmi also expressed sympathy for the other person whose result was allegedly mixed up with his.
He wondered how the person might have felt after initially receiving a different result, only to potentially be called back by the doctor afterwards.
Wife was with him when he received the result
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Fahmi revealed that his wife was actually with him when he was first informed of the result.
“She probably felt like strangling me at that point, but thankfully she was still rational,” he joked.
Although he can laugh about the experience now, Fahmi said the period while waiting for his second result was stressful.
“Of course I was affected. My mind was already thinking about all sorts of negative things,” he told WeirdKaya.
Lab allegedly mixed up the results
Fahmi also shared more details with WeirdKaya about what he was told regarding the alleged mistake.
According to him, the doctor who apologised was not the person who had carried out the test.
The doctor apologised, but he was not the one who did the test. The lab mixed it up because there happened to be a lot of blood samples that needed to be tested,” Fahmi said.
He was not given further details about exactly how the mix up happened.
Never found out about the other patient
When asked whether he knew what eventually happened to the other person involved, Fahmi said he did not.
“No. The doctor did not tell me anything about the person whose blood was mixed up with mine. Privacy,” he told WeirdKaya.
As such, Fahmi never found out who the other patient was or what happened after the alleged mistake was discovered.
Incident happened when wife was pregnant with second child
Fahmi further revealed that the incident happened around 12 years ago, which would place it around 2014.
At the time, his wife was pregnant with their second child.
“This happened when my wife was pregnant with our second baby,” he told WeirdKaya.
Fahmi said fathers were required to undergo blood checks at the clinic when their wives were pregnant.
According to him, the purpose was to help doctors determine the appropriate next steps should there be concerns about the baby’s health.
While it has been around 12 years since the incident, Fahmi said he still feels worried whenever he has to undergo similar tests, and would remind medical staff not to mix up his blood sample or result.
