Cloud seeding in Sarawak will continue based on wind and cloud conditions to help reduce haze and improve unhealthy air quality ahead of Malaysia Day

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Cloud seeding operations in Sarawak will continue, depending on wind patterns and the location of suitable clouds, to help reduce the haze in the state, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the operations were being carried out based on advice from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

“The operations will continue depending on wind conditions and cloud cover. We are taking advice from MetMalaysia on when and where cloud seeding should be carried out based on the prevailing wind patterns,” he told reporters after launching the national-level Orang Asli Sports Carnival (KSOA) 2026 at the EduCity Sports Complex here today.

Also present was Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, said Kuching and Sri Aman were among the areas in Sarawak recording unhealthy air quality.

However, the Rural and Regional Development Minister said the situation in Sri Aman had improved.

He expressed hope that the cloud seeding operations would continue to help bring down the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Sarawak, particularly ahead of the Malaysia Day celebrations in Kuching.

As of 8 am today, Kuching and Sri Aman recorded API readings of 235 and 216 respectively, both at the very unhealthy level.
