KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the State Government will not compromise in conserving Sabah’s wetlands, which are vital for both environmental protection and sustainable development.

He said wetlands can generate economic opportunities through eco-tourism, sustainable fisheries, carbon trading, and community-led enterprises while safeguarding nature for future generations.

Speaking at the 5th International Symposium on Conservation and Management of Wetlands 2025, Hajiji highlighted initiatives including gazetting protected areas, designating Ramsar sites, and supporting mangrove and coastal ecosystem conservation.

The State Government, he said, is also pursuing nature-based solutions, climate adaptation strategies, and international partnerships to strengthen wetlands management.

Hajiji commended the Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society for its efforts, including restoring mangroves and working towards the nomination of Klias Peninsular and Lahad Datu wetlands as Ramsar sites.
