Coincidently, my medical appointment with Cardiologist, Dr. Siow Yoon Kee of Health Institute at Hospital Sultan Idris Shah, Serdang falls on Chap Goh Meh. It was most timely for my wife, Zarina & I and our eldest son, Farouq to wish “Happy Chap Goh Meh to Dr. Siow, & his best half, and leaders of Soka Gakkai Malaysia”. He explained to me “Chap Goh’ means fifteen in Hokkien and ‘Meh’ is night, so it's the Fifteen Night”. ‘Chap Goh Meh’ is also known as Chinese Valentine's Day and it is a significant day for the Chinese community. It is a festival where family gather together while counting their blessings.”

Zarina & I are patients of Dr. Siow and essentially have our regular heart check-up for detecting silent cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, levers & diabetes before they cause serious damage. They allow for early intervention, enabling lifestyle adjustments or treatment to prevent heart attacks and strokes. He said, “Regular screening are crucial for individuals over 20, or younger if risk factors exist to monitor heart health over time.”

Well obviously, for seniors over 70 like me who had performed double bypass open-heart surgeries, regular heart check-ups shift from simple prevention to managing the physical change of aging, such as stiffening arteries and thickening heart walls. At my ripe age, cardiovascular risk increases significantly, making every six-month visits to a healthcare provider or cardiologist, like Dr. Siow and pro team essential at the Heart Institute of Hospital SIS Serdang.

I'm fortunate to know Cardiologist Dr. Siow who is one of the leading youth leaders of Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), a prominent community development organization focusing on promoting peace, culture, and education, fostering individual empowerment, and contributing to social harmony within Malaysia's diverse society. Their key activities include promoting human dignity, interfaith dialogue & community engagement to foster personal and social growth.
