MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) clarified that the arrest of former lawmaker Zaldy Co was not its sole responsibility as it also requireed cooperation with the international poloce (Interpol).

The DFA took note of the recent statements by Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla on the efforts to secure Co's return to the country to face charges related to "ghost" flood control projects.

In a statement on Tuesday, the DFA clarified that Co's arrest and repatriation "involved coordinated law enforcement and judicial processes, particularly Interpol coordination."

"Secretary Remulla's view that the matter rests solely 'up to the DFA' does not fully capture this whole-of-government approach, which requires joint action across concerned government agencies," it added.

The DFA said it was committed to upholding "the rule of law and ensuring that Filipinos facing legal accountability return to face due process."

"We urge the public to share any information on Mr. Co’s whereabouts to support these efforts," the Foreign Affairs department said.

The DFA "stands ready to provide diplomatic assistance within its mandate and in line with established protocols," it added.
