The Court of the District and Sessions Judge has awarded rigorous imprisonment (RI) for life to four persons, including a wrestling coach, his wife and his two brothers-in-law, for the murder of a woman wrestler and her brother, as well as the attempt to murder their mother in Halalpur village of Sonepat district on November 10, 2021.
In her complaint to the Kharkhoda police, Dhanpati, stated that Pawan Kumar, a resident of Baland village in Rohtak district, was running a wrestling academy in the name of Olympian Sushil Kumar in Halalpur village for the past three years. He was married in Halalpur, and his wife also worked as a coach in the academy.
Several wrestlers from nearby villages were receiving training there, and her 22-year-old daughter Nisha was also enrolled in the academy.
Nisha’s 18-year-old brother Sooraj used to drop her at the academy daily. On November 10, too, he had dropped Nisha there for practice.
Later, the family was informed by the academy that Nisha had completed her training. Following this call, Sooraj and Dhanpati reached the academy, where the coach and his associates allegedly opened fire on them. They managed to run outside to save their lives. Nisha had already been shot dead near the academy gate.
Sooraj was chased and shot dead near a canal after sustaining bullet injuries.
The police registered a case against academy owner Pawan, his wife Sujata, and his two brothers-in-law Amit and Sachin under various sections of the IPC and later arrested all four accused.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Dr Jasbir Singh held all four accused guilty in the case. The court awarded rigorous imprisonment for life (till the last breath) to Pawan Kumar and imposed a fine of Rs 82,000.
The court also sentenced Sujata to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 75,000, while Amit and Sachin were each awarded life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 80,000.
