Colby Covington has thrown his support behind Kamaru Usman to get the next shot at the welterweight title.
Earlier today, Islam Makhachev’s manager played down Ian Machado Garry’s chances, saying they’re discussing something ‘much bigger’.
The Irish fighter had looked likely to be first in line to face the new champion in the coming months.
Even though Covington still has lingering issues with Usman, he set those aside when talking about his former rival’s hopes of another title run.

Colby Covington has backed Kamaru Usman to get the next welterweight title shot, pointing to the rest of the division as part of his reasoning.
The way ‘Chaos’ rose through the 170-pound ranks had a lot to do with his loud personality and how divisive he became, but this wasn’t something he held against Usman in this particular conversation.
Speaking to Bloody Elbow, Covington noted that while Usman himself doesn’t believe the UFC is convinced, the lack of standout options elsewhere helps his case.
“I think he deserves it. He’s a former champion, he’s been in the sport, he’s made his mark,” he explained. “So, it sells, you know? These other kids, there’s just no personality. They couldn’t sell s— to flies and we know how much flies love s—. I think it makes sense.”
Covington also mentioned that fighters have little control over these decisions and can only stay ready for whatever direction the UFC decides to take.
The former interim champion shared similar thoughts about the division when discussing his own plans for a return.
“Most of these fighters at welterweight can’t draw money with a green crayon and a white piece of paper,” he said.
