Comelec seeks clarity on BSKE postponement

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is seeking clarity on the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) elections after Congress approved a measure delaying the polls, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said.

In a press briefing on Monday night, Garcia said that the development could create a problem for the poll body because the filing of candidacies for barangay and SK candidates was scheduled from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5, 2026.

“We have a bit of a problem,” Garcia said in Filipino during a press conference.

He said the Comelec would need a clear law on the postponement before the scheduled filing period.

“I hope there will really be a law, whatever it may be, before Sept. 28 so that it will be clear to the Comelec,” Garcia said in Filipino.

Garcia said the issue was important because the Comelec had scheduled the filing of candidacies for the barangay and SK elections.

The chairman said the commission would continue carrying out its duties while awaiting clearer legal guidance on the postponed elections.
