PAPAR: A concrete jetty will be constructed in Kampung Kuala here following the completion of the Kampung Benoni project, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali last Saturday.

The Papar MP said this during the launch of the Rahmah Madani ceremony in held conjunction with the Sentuhan Kasih Programme, Rahmah Sales and Consumer Advocacy here.

Armizan acknowledged the need for a concrete jetty at Kampung Kuala but emphasised that flood mitigation projects must be completed first before proceeding with the jetty construction.

“For the people of Kampung Kuala, please be patient. Right now, we need to complete the flood mitigation project there first.

“Once that is done, we will identify the location and hopefully complete it soon,” he said, adding that discussions would be held with relevant parties to determine the best approach for the Kampung Kuala jetty.

During the ceremony, Armizan witnessed the handover of a RM200,000 allocation cheque from Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) Chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil to District Officer Muhammad Mohd Ali for the construction and upgrading of the fishermen’s jetty.

The upgrade follows severe damage to the Kampung Benoni jetty caused by king tides on January 18, with the allocation approved on July 4 after Armizan’s request to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

LKIM also distributed fishing nets and fish containers to 80 fishermen, presented the Jalur Gemilang to the Kampung Seberang Village Development and Security Committee and donated furniture for the Kampung Benoni Village Hall.

Muhammad Faiz said LKIM plans to build a fisheries complex in Sabah, either in Sandakan or Semporna, with the RM200,000 LKIM concrete jetty at Kampung Benoni expected to be completed within five to six months.

The event, held at Kampung Seberang Village Hall, featured various competitions and Rahmah sales, attracting some 5,000 visitors.
