Cone to maximize use of Kai Sotto in FIBA qualifiers

GILAS Pilipinas coach Tim Cone intends to make the most out of Kai Sotto’s return since the 7-foot-3 Filipino’s commitment will only be limited to the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

“Only for the window,” said Cone of the 24-year-old Sotto, who joined the team’s practice last Monday, a positive development for the national team.

Cone described Sotto as a “game changer,” noting his size provides Gilas Pilipinas a reliable rebounder, shot blocker and an excellent passer.

The Philippines has lost its last four games in the FIBA qualifiers, but with Sotto’s presence and the impending return of naturalized player Justin Brownlee from injury, Cone is optimistic Gilas Pilipinas will win its two home games next week.

Gilas battles Jordan on Aug. 28, followed by Iran on Aug. 30 in a pair of home games at the SM Mall of Asia Arena as the second round of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers begins.

With a 2-4 card, the Philippines occupies fifth spot in the Group E standings where Australia leads the pack at 6-0, followed by Jordan and Iran at 5-1, and New Zealand at 4-2.

Syria is at the bottom of the group with a 2-4 card.

Sotto saw action for Gilas Pilipinas during its 81-76 win against Korean club Ulsan Mobis in their friendly match last Thursday.
