The Congress leadership successfully managed internal differences that cropped up on Wednesday during the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Nurpur Municipal Council (MC) councillors over the selection of the vice-chairperson candidate.
Due to a lack of quorum, the election for the posts of chairperson and vice-chairperson had been deferred and rescheduled for today by the Nurpur SDM.
The election process was conducted under the chairmanship of the SDM, who received only single nominations for both top posts. Consequently, Niti Mahajan (Ward No. 4 councillor) and Sonia Soga (Ward No. 6 councillor) were declared elected unopposed as chairperson and vice-chairperson, respectively. Thanking the councillors and local residents, the newly elected office-bearers promised to work for the overall development of the town.
Later, Congress supporters took out a victory rally in the town alongside the newly elected councillors and leadership.
In a reversal of fortunes from the last term — where the BJP held a six-three majority and formed the MC — Congress-supported candidates won six out of nine wards this time, leaving the BJP-backed aspirants with just three seats.
