‘Congratulations to Donald Trump on a successful regime change’: Late night hosts react to Democrat sweep

Donald Trump’s ongoing crusade against late night TV hosts has backfired as comedians from Jimmy Kimmel to Stephen Colbert gleefully celebrated the president’s massive loss at the midterm elections.

In a disastrous night for Republicans, voters delivered a rebuke to Trump with a Democrat sweep taking back control of both the house and the Senate during Tuesday’s election.

“Congratulations to Donald Trump on a successful regime change,” The Daily Show posted on X about the blue wave.

Elsewhere, former late night host Colbert celebrated as South Carolina — where he was raised — went blue for the first time since 1998, electing Democrat Annie Andrews to the Senate instead of GOP darling Darline Graham.

Colbert shared a picture of the South Carolina flag on his Instagram Story and shared his optimism for the win by writing a Latin phrase underneath it: “Dum Spiro Spero,” which translates to “while I breathe, I hope.”

Although none of the major late-night talk shows aired live Tuesday, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! was taped later in the night so the host could react to the early results.

During his monologue, 58-year-old Kimmel referenced Trump’s recent fixation on his colleagues’ rear ends, saying: “After all of the talk about Nicki Minaj's ass, John Husted's ass. The only ass on Trump's mind tonight is the one that got handed to him.”

“What we do know for sure is that Democrats have officially taken the House. Thanks to President Trump. Blob Vila flipped another House!” Kimmel said, adding: “The blue wave made landfall, and now the Red Wedding begins.”

The Red Wedding is a reference to an infamous Game of Thrones episode where several of the show’s heroes were brutally massacred.

Kimmel later joked that “Trump spent the day at the White House watching Fox News trying to give himself an insurrection.”

“Word from the White House is that he already ran out of dipping sauce containers to throw at the television set,” he added. “Man, oh man, would I hate to be the DoorDash driver who delivers Trump his Papa John’s tonight.”

The Daily Show also joked about Trump being a sore loser, writing on X: “BREAKING: Trump to commemorate his losses across the South by putting his name on a Confederate monument.”

Although Trump admitted that “Democrats did a good job,” the president has already threatened to use one of his most significant remaining powers, the presidential veto, on future legislation, which would create a government deadlock.

The mockery of Trump’s loss comes as the latest in the president’s long-running public feuds with several late night hosts. Earlier this year, Trump celebrated the end of Colbert’s show by writing on Truth Social that the comic had “No talent, no ratings, no life.”

Trump’s hatred of Kimmel is the most notable of the bunch, as he has frequently labeled Kimmel as a “loser” with no talent and repeatedly called for his show to be canceled.
