TRANSPORTATION Secretary Giovanni Lopez on Wednesday ordered the Land Transportation and Franchising Board (LTFRB) to initiate consultations in connection with pending fare hike petitions.
Lopez also said that the government is studying possible expansion of fuel discount programs amid rising oil prices.
“This move follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to study how to balance the welfare of both drivers and commuters,” Lopez said.
He stressed that the LTFRB should start the process and, at the same time, look into the possibility of expanding government interventions like the fuel subsidy or fuel discount.
“In that way, we can help manage inflation. I believe the president will also take up and address this issue, as it is a priority for him,” the top DOTr official added.
He emphasized the importance of thoroughly reviewing the petitions, especially given their potential impact on inflation — which, according to a survey, remains a top concern among Filipinos.
“The complication right now is that we also have to address inflation. In a recent survey, one of the top concerns of our fellow Filipinos is how to manage inflation,” Lopez said.
The DOTr chief reiterated that he instructed LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza to start the process, including holding public consultations and discussions with regional directors nationwide.
