Zahid is a controversial figure in Malaysian politics and it is of no surprise to see him appointing Ramesh Rao as his special officer in charge of matters related to the Indian community. With this appointment, Ramesh will be responsible for approaching and engaging with members of the Indian community in Malaysia.

Rao is reportedly a controversial figure himself, which brings to mind the phrase of "Controversy Loves Company" and coincidentally it was also the title of a record album by an American rock band The Audition, released in 2005.

At the same time it would not be too much of an exaggeration either if I were to say that "misery loves company" as in this case.

Malay Mail reported that Zahid made the announcement during a unity government luncheon at a temple in Shah Alam on the day before Christmas, referring to Ramesh as his “younger brother”. At the same time, Zahid joked that if the voices of the Indian community go unheard, then it is not the fault of the Prime Minister or his deputies, but the blame would lie on Ramesh.

Ramesh is a staunch supporter of Barisan Nasional, and is reportedly "active on social media and can be seen commenting on pretty much any political posts to defend BN and [...] members of the unity government."

He courted controversy when he tweeted alleging that the judge in former Najib Razak’s 1MDB-linked SRC International corruption case was biased and the police summoned him to Bukit Aman.

Zahid's appointment as DPM is controversial enough. But so is Ramesh's.

Anyway, back to the rock group mentioned earlier. After their album was released through Victory Records in November 2004, Controversy Loves Company received mixed reviews from critics, some of whom praised the musicianship and songwriting, while others considered it uninspiring.

We cannot say much about feedback on Ramesh's appointment so far.

But knowing his reputation, Ramesh might just receive mixed reviews by next week as Controversy Loves Company did more than a decade ago.
