Kota Kinabalu: Police are investigating a tragic accident that resulted in the death of one child and left another seriously injured on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen, near Teluk Likas at around 9.45am on Monday.
The incident involved a Perodua Axia driven by a 55-year-old local man who collided with two girls, aged 12 and 7, as they were crossing the road.
City Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said the impact of the crash caused the death of one child at the scene, while the other suffered head injuries and is receiving medical attention at Likas Hospital.

The driver was uninjured. Preliminary investigations suggest that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident.
“However, a toxicology sample has been taken for further analysis,” he said in a statement, adding that a case has been opened under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation.
In addition, the police have reminded the public, particularly parents and guardians, to be vigilant about child safety when crossing streets, especially in areas without designated pedestrian crossings.
Meanwhile, they are also investigating the discovery of a male body found floating in the sea near the Sunsite Bar area in Tanjung Aru.
Police were alerted the same day of discovery by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) at 2.30pm.
“The body was recovered by the APM team and taken to the APM Tower in Tanjung Aru for further action.
“Police units, including members of MPV (KK16 & KK123) and the Kepayan Ridge Police Patrol Unit, were dispatched to the scene to conduct an initial investigation.
“Forensic officers from the Sabah Police Headquarters and the investigating officer were also notified and deployed to the site,” Kasim said.
He said the body had been sent to the Forensic Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
