POLICE will work to identify the accomplices of the Malaysian man who was arrested in Hong Kong with over RM116.1 million worth of methamphetamine, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Hussain.
Razarudin said he had instructed the federal Narcotic Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin to liaise with Bukit Aman’s counterparts in Hong Kong.
“I told him to liaise with them. This is to gather intelligence on the involvement of the suspects’ accomplices in Malaysia,” he told the New Straits Times today.
The country’s top cop said checks revealed that the suspect, 26, was from Sungai Besi.
“The suspect has one prior record for drug possession and drug consumption under Section 12(2) and Section15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
“We will know more once we get further information from the police there,” he was quoted as saying by the English-language daily.
The South China Morning Post earlier today reported that Hong Kong police made their largest-ever seizure of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”, with a drug haul valued at HKD210 million.
The drugs were discovered hidden in furniture, and a 26-year-old Malaysian man was arrested on suspicion of trafficking.
According to the South China Morning Post, Cheung Hok-fung from the narcotics bureau said the raid uncovered 335kg of crystal meth and 55kg of cocaine, concealed in 25 of 245 boxes hidden within furniture.
The drugs were found in a shipping container that had arrived from the United States on Tuesday last week.
Cheung said the suspect had entered Hong Kong as a tourist last year, allegedly to plan the whole trafficking scheme.
The suspect faces a charge of trafficking in dangerous drugs and is scheduled to appear in Tuen Mun court today.
Under Hong Kong law, drug trafficking carries severe penalties, including a HK$5 million (RM2.85 million) fine and life imprisonment. – September 15, 2024.
