KUALA LUMPUR — A 26-year-old Malaysian was arrested in Hong Kong in the city’s biggest drug bust involving ice or crystal meth and cocaine worth a total of HK$210 million (RM116.1 million).

South China Morning Post reported the city’s narcotics bureau confirming the seizures which were found in 25 out of 245 boxes concealed in furniture in a shipping container that arrived from the United States.

The amount of ice seized weighed 335kg and the cocaine 55kg.

The Malaysian, who entered Hong Kong as a tourist a year ago, was arrested on suspicion of trafficking the drugs and was brought to court yesterday (September 15).

It is believed a Malaysian syndicate recruited foreigners to traffic drugs and split its operations into “smaller parts” to avoid detection, SCMP also quoted a senior inspector saying.

The inspector, Tong Wai-Kwok, said logistics companies should be careful when customers provide vague information.

The syndicate had used a logistic company to transport the shipping container where the drugs were found to a warehouse, Tong added.

The Malaysian who was arrested was found unpacking the goods when police raided the warehouse last Thursday. — September 15, 2024
