THE upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election is expected to be shaped by a combination of local governance concerns, economic issues and the continuing fallout from the state's recent constitutional and royal crisis.
The election, which will determine the composition of the 36-member State Legislative Assembly, comes after the assembly was dissolved on June 5 following weeks of political uncertainty linked to a dispute involving the state's royal institution and the withdrawal of support for the state government by Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen.
Among the issues expected to feature prominently during the campaign is the cost of living.
Political parties across the spectrum are expected to focus on household expenses, food prices, housing affordability, employment opportunities and income growth. Economic concerns have remained a key issue among voters nationwide and are expected to feature prominently in campaign messaging.
Development and infrastructure are also likely to be major talking points.
While areas such as Seremban and Nilai have experienced rapid industrial and commercial growth, concerns over infrastructure, connectivity, employment opportunities and access to services continue to be raised in several rural and semi-rural districts, including Kuala Pilah, Jelebu, Jempol and Tampin.
The election will also place a spotlight on the performance of the state government led by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.
Pakatan Harapan (PH), which has governed Negeri Sembilan since 2018, is expected to campaign on its record in office, including investment promotion, development initiatives and state administration.
BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN), meanwhile, are expected to focus on governance and policy issues as they seek to expand support among voters.
A major backdrop to the election remains the ongoing royal and constitutional dispute that has drawn national attention in recent months.
The crisis began following attempts by four Undang to remove the reigning Yang di-Pertuan Besar, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and proclaim another claimant to the throne. The dispute subsequently led to legal challenges, political disagreements and uncertainty over the state's constitutional arrangements.
The issue later spilled into state politics, contributing to tensions between political parties and eventually culminating in the dissolution of the state assembly.
Another issue likely to attract attention is the relationship between the state and federal governments.
With PH leading the state administration and being part of the federal government, questions surrounding federal-state cooperation, project implementation and development priorities are expected to arise during the campaign.
The election is also expected to provide an indication of voter sentiment among different demographic groups and regions across the state.
Negeri Sembilan's electorate comprises a mix of urban, semi-urban and rural constituencies, with voting patterns often influenced by local issues, candidate profiles and constituency-specific concerns.
