- English councils are set to receive £41 million in new funding and training to intensify their crackdown on rogue landlords.
- This investment prepares local authorities for strengthened powers and responsibilities under the Renters’ Rights Act, which comes into force on 1 May.
- The legislation will impose a “duty to enforce” on councils, legally obliging them to ensure landlords adhere to new rules, including bans on bidding wars and no-fault evictions.
- Landlords who seriously or repeatedly breach the law will face significantly higher penalties, with maximum fines increasing to £40,000.
- The government is also investing £50 million in modernising civil courts to help process disputes, with housing sector leaders welcoming the measures to protect tenants.
