TAWAU: Police have arrested a foreign couple after doctors suspected their two-month-old baby girl was abused and not injured in a fall as claimed.
Acting Tawau Police Chief Supt Wilynton Enchana Watt said the baby had bruising on her forehead, a bite mark on her cheek and swelling at the back of her head, which contradicted the parents' account.
He said the report was lodged after the baby's grandmother told Hospital Tawau doctors the injuries were believed to have been caused by the couple.
The man in his 30s and his 18-year-old wife were arrested at Hospital Tawau at about 11.45pm on Monday, with the case being investigated under the Child Act 2001 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Wilynton urged the public to report suspected child abuse or neglect to the police, while commending Hospital Tawau medical staff for their swift action.
