BELURAN: A couple were arrested after they were found in possession of five packets of suspected syabu weighing 250.32 grammes and worth an estimated RM27,000 at the roadside of a privately owned oil palm plantation in Kampung Cenderamata, Tagas-Tagas, here, on Wednesday morning.
The couple, aged 38 and 28, were arrested by a team from the Beluran District Police Headquarters (IPD) Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division at about 7am.
Beluran District Police Chief Supt Hasan Majid said an inspection of one of the suspects led to the discovery of five plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu.
“The drugs had a gross weight of 250.32 grammes, with an estimated value of RM27,000.
“Both suspects are locals and neither has any previous criminal record,” he said in a statement.
He said urine screening tests also found that both suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The couple are currently detained at the Beluran Police Station to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and at least 12 strokes of whipping upon conviction.
Hasan said police took drug trafficking, possession and abuse seriously and welcomed public cooperation in providing information to help curb such activities.
