THE National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reminded courier companies and delivery riders to be vigilant when receiving and delivering parcels.
According to NCRPO officer-in-charge BGen. Christopher Abrahano, syndicates can use legitimate courier services to hide and deliver illegal drugs and other contraband.
“We are reminding all courier companies and delivery personnel to be vigilant. Do not allow your legitimate business to be unknowingly used as a tool by criminal syndicates in transporting illegal drugs or other contraband,” said Abrahano in a statement on Sunday.
Abrahano made the remarks after two motorcycle delivery riders in Barangay Parang, Marikina City, noticed a suspicious parcel they were entrusted to deliver and asked a police officer for help on Sept. 18.
During the investigation, various types of illegal drugs worth at least P150,000 were recovered from the parcel.
"We understand that couriers may unknowingly be used by these criminal groups. That is why vigilance and proper procedures are extremely important. If a transaction or package raises legitimate suspicion, report it immediately and coordinate with the authorities,” said Abrahano.
The Metro Manila police chief said that delivery and courier service companies must ensure their personnel or riders are skilled and knowledgeable in identifying suspicious transactions based on existing laws, regulations, and internal security measures so their companies are not used for illegal transactions or the delivery of contraband.
"Criminal syndicates will always look for ways to exploit legitimate businesses. We will not allow our courier and delivery systems to become a convenient channel for their illegal activities,” Abrahano said.
“Remain alert, follow established procedures, and immediately report anything suspicious. Your vigilance can help prevent a criminal operation and protect the public,” he added.
After the incident, the NCRPO will strengthen coordination with courier companies and other stakeholders to prevent the use of legitimate delivery services to transport illegal drugs and contraband.
