Court grants adjournment as Ismail Sabri to undergo heart surgery

Kuala Lumpur: Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is scheduled to undergo heart surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN) today, his lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad told the sessions court this morning.

Amer informed judge Suzana Hussin that Ismail experienced a health complication while giving his statement at the MACC headquarters yesterday and was rushed to IJN.

“On the way to court this morning, we were informed that he will undergo a procedure this afternoon at 2pm. Given the circumstances, we request that the proceedings be adjourned to another date,” he said.

The court allowed the adjournment and fixed Aug 27 to hear the charge against Ismail.

Ragunath Kesavan also represented Ismail. The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Farah Ezlin Yusop Khan.

Ismail was initially scheduled to be charged under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act this morning.

The case purportedly involves his declaration of assets.

Ismail was previously at the centre of corruption and money laundering allegations, and was called in by MACC for multiple rounds of questioning last year.

MACC was investigating the discovery of about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit, seized in raids on the residences of four men and three other premises believed to be “safe houses”.

The probe was reportedly linked to the expenditure and procurement of funds for promotional and publicity activities under the Keluarga Malaysia initiative, during Ismail’s tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.

The anti-graft agency completed its probe in June 2025.
