Coventry City have secured promotion to the Premier League, ending a 25-year absence from the top flight after a dramatic draw at Blackburn Rovers.

COVENTRY City secured promotion to the Premier League on Friday, ending a 25-year exile from English football’s top flight.

The Championship leaders’ 1-1 draw away to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park guaranteed their automatic return with three games to spare.

Frank Lampard’s side needed just a point to confirm their ascent. They achieved it the hard way, falling behind to a deflected Ryoya Morishita strike in the 54th minute before Bobby Thomas headed a priceless 84th-minute equaliser from a Victor Torp free-kick.

“It was an incredible moment. This is what it’s about,” a tearful Lampard said in an emotional post-match interview. “Doing this after 25 years? Wow! Wow!”

Backed by 7,500 travelling fans, Coventry endured a nervous display that will be quickly forgotten amid the promotion celebrations. Supporters wept tears of joy at the final whistle, marking the culmination of a remarkable journey for a club that plummeted to the fourth tier and faced stadium exile earlier this century.

“Amazing, amazing. I couldn’t believe it when it went in,” goalscorer Thomas said. “It’s been a hell of a season. I feel like we deserve it.”

The club’s previous promotion to the top flight in 1967 was also sealed at Ewood Park. Their subsequent 34-year spell in the elite ended with relegation in 2001, sparking a steep decline that included a season in League Two and three years playing home games outside Coventry due to a stadium dispute.

The revival was initially piloted by Mark Robins, who secured promotions from League Two and League One. After losing the 2023 Championship play-off final and Robins’ subsequent dismissal, the appointment of Lampard in 2024 proved inspired.

Lampard revived his own career following sackings by Chelsea and Everton, steering Coventry clear of relegation before a play-off semi-final loss last season. Fuelled by that pain, the team embarked on a relentless march this campaign, establishing themselves as the division’s dominant force with early statement wins.

“To go and get promotion automatically as a non-parachute team with three games to go. These boys have managed to achieve something special and unique,” Lampard added.

The success has galvanised the city, according to local officials. “It’s huge for Coventry football club and the fans, but for Coventry itself as a city, this has been massive,” said Lord Mayor Rachel Lancaster.

Owner Doug King echoed the sentiment, highlighting the long wait for fans. “Twenty-five years is a huge amount of time. If you don’t bounce back you feel like it’s never going to happen,” King said. “We got the whole city together. I’m super proud of everybody.”

With promotion secured, Coventry can now target the Championship title, holding an 11-point lead over second-placed Ipswich Town.
