It’s not a sequel, but it might just be better. Crazy Rich Asians will continue as a series on HBO Max, with the core cast returning.

Crazy Rich Asians was a big milestone for Asian representation in Hollywood. It had an Asian cast, was led by an Asian director, and was filmed in Malaysia and Singapore. Not only was it a win for Asian representation, but it was generally a huge success. It got nominated for two Golden Globes as well as a number of other awards and was a big box office hit. So it’s surprising that despite there being two more books in the series, no sequel has been made in the past seven years, despite Warner Bros. saying it was in development.

Well, the wait is over. HBO has finally greenlit the follow-up to Crazy Rich Asians, though instead of a movie, we’re getting a one-hour original drama series.

Crazy Rich Asians continues in a new HBO Max series

The announcement was made early in the morning (Bangkok time), revealing that instead of a sequel, fans will be getting an eight-episode series that will adapt the next two books in the series, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Also serving as executive producers are Jon M. Chu, the film’s director, alongside Nina Jabson and Brad Simpson.

As for the cast, Henry Golding and Constance Wu will be returning as Nick and Rachel. Ronny Chieng will also reprise his role as Nick’s cousin, Eddie. Finally, Michelle Yeoh will also be reprising her role as Eleanor in a recurring manner. Whether Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, and the other cast members return remains to be seen.

The 2018 film, adapted from the original Crazy Rich Asians novel, followed Nick and Rachel’s love story, and how Rachel discovered that the man she had fallen in love with is part of a family that’s insanely wealthy. The next two books in the series continue their love story, and all the drama and intricacies of being in a wealthy family. Since only an eight-episode season has been greenlit, it’s unclear whether this entire season will adapt just one or both books.

Production starts in 2027, so we can expect it to drop sometime in 2028.
