Kota Kinabalu: The American Green Corner at the Sabah State Library, Tanjung Aru, will host a free workshop this Saturday from 9am to 11am, where participants will learn how to craft flowers from plastic waste.
All materials and tools will be provided at no cost.
The workshop, funded by the US Embassy Kuala Lumpur, marks the third session supported by the Embassy.
The first, held on Aug 10, focused on creating upcycled keychains, followed by a session during Malaysia’s Independence Day where participants made purses from plastic waste donated by Uniqlo.

Juli Apang, the workshop’s trainer and co-founder of LJD Corporation, an accredited social enterprise, highlighted the importance of upcycling plastic waste.
“Plastic waste can take anywhere from 20 to 500 years to decompose, and even then, it never fully disappears. It breaks down into microplastics, which persist in the environment indefinitely,” said Apang.
The workshop is being held in collaboration with the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (SCENIC), a government agency that supports environmentally friendly community initiatives.
Melvitajit Kaur Shandu, Scenic’s Digital Marketing Specialist, expressed the agency’s commitment to supporting social enterprises with sustainable missions.
“The previous two workshops were not only creative but also incredibly therapeutic. They offered participants a unique way to engage with sustainability while bonding with friends and family,” said Shandu.
She added that Scenic is proud to support such programmes, which have a lasting positive impact on both the environment and the community.
Following the workshop, the American Green Corner Sabah, in collaboration with MASeSa (Persatuan Mesra Alam Sekitar Sabah), will organise a beach clean-up at Tanjung Aru Beach 1 in the evening.
While participation in the clean-up is encouraged for those who attend the workshop, it is not compulsory.
